Valdez host over 150 sport routes and 100 trad routes in all kinds of settings. Valdez also has an indoor climbing wall free to the public, it's open twice a week in the evenings throughout most of the year.

Guided Rock Climbing Tours

Alaska Guide Co. provides guided rock climbing tours from April through September, possibly later depending on weather. Their climbing tours range from instructional tours for beginners, to advanced trad climbers who have all their own gear and are just looking for local knowledge and a belay. Whatever your climbing goals are in the Valdez area, they are able to support you.

Indoor Evening Rock Climbing

The City of Valdez runs the indoor climbing facility located in the rear of the high school. To get there park in the front of the high school and enter through the gymnasium doors located near the middle of the building. You can bring your own harness and shoes provided they are free of dirt. The city offers harnesses and shoes to check out for free at the climbing wall.

When and Where to Climb

Outdoor rock climbing can begin as soon as late March out at Campground Wall, a week or so later climbing opens at Panorama Point and Lookout Point as the trail clears of the last snow. If it stays dry and warm they can be climbed in to October.

Climbing up at Thompson Pass usually opens (frees of snow) by the last week of June and can run through September.
